From the Superintendent
 Dear Community:
As many of you know, Deming Public Schools conducted a bond election January 29, 2008, for a new high school. It failed. Both the Board of Education and the Superintendent are committed to understanding the bond election results because students need a new high school. Over the past few weeks we have heard many anecdotal reasons why voters supported or opposed the bond. We feel it is our responsibility to listen to voters and to find out in a scientific manner what caused the bond issue to fail.
The district, through Brian Sanderoff of Research and Polling, Inc., is conducting two surveys with studies of three populations of voters. The three populations are the voters who supported the bond, the voters who did not support the bond, and the staff of DPS. We need to listen to all of these populations.
In addition to information on the election, the district will have a report card from the adults of Luna County telling us how they feel about the quality of education that the district is providing for students. By itself, this is a very valid reason to conduct these surveys.
Research and Polling, Inc. does polls like these all the time. Mr. Sanderoff has 22 years experience working with cities, counties, and schools to help them determine the results of their bond elections. It is not unusual for government agencies and schools to get a performance report card from the public, and that is what Deming Public Schools is doing here in Luna County.
We have had many public forums, receiving and answering questions and talking to groups and individuals. In spite of our efforts, we want to reach more people. The Public School Capital Outlay Council has encouraged DPS to do everything we can to find out the reasons for lack of more support on the bond.
Please feel free to call or e-mail ideas or questions.
Sincerely,
Harvielee Moore
