2024-2025 New Mexico State Assessment Results
Posted on 10/24/2025

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Members of the Deming Community,

I am pleased to share with you the results from the 2024–2025 New Mexico state assessment cycle, which highlight strong areas of academic growth and progress across Deming Public Schools. While New Mexico as a whole made significant strides in literacy and stabilized science performance, some Deming schools were among those that had the largest gains in the state.  This growth reflects the dedication of our students, teachers, staff, and families.

Celebrating Growth Across Our District

Reading and Literacy: Exceptional Growth
Deming Public Schools mirrored—and in many cases exceeded—the state’s impressive literacy gains.

  • Deming High School was recognized among the top large schools in New Mexico for literacy growth, increasing proficiency by 12.5 percentage points to 31.6%.
  • Memorial Elementary was highlighted statewide for a 13.9-point increase, reaching 47% proficiency, one of the top improvements in New Mexico.
  • Early College High School continues to excel, with over 70% literacy proficiency, well above the state average of 44%.

These outcomes show the impact of our focus on structured literacy, early reading supports, and high-quality coaching from administrators and instructional coaches. Our renewed commitment to data-driven instruction and accountability is helping us ensure that every student’s learning needs are met.

Mathematics: Promising Gains with Room to Grow

Across the state, math proficiency rose slightly—up 1% to 27% in 2025—but several Deming schools stood out for meaningful progress.

  • Early College High School achieved one of the largest math gains statewide, improving by 30.3 percentage points to 47.9% proficiency, more than double the state average.
  • Deming Intermediate continued to improve, with proficiency rising by nearly 8 points over two years.

Similar to statewide trends, math gains overall have been modest. However, schools that set intentional math goals supported by high-quality instructional materials and focused action plans are showing measurable success. We will continue to build on these strategies districtwide.

Science: An Opportunity to Build Engagement and Hands-On Learning

Statewide, science scores held steady at an average of 35%. Deming’s results reflect both progress and opportunity:

  • Deming High School continues to improve, now at 36.8% proficiency, while Early College High School leads the district at 62.5% proficiency.

To support continued growth, DPS recently adopted new science instructional materials and will expand hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences to strengthen student engagement in STEM classrooms across all campuses.

These achievements are the direct result of the people who make up our school system.  These gains are the result of hard work, dedication, and belief—in our students, our schools, and our community.  We are proud of every student who showed growth, every teacher who planned lessons with purpose, every staff member who supported our campuses, and every principal and assistant principal who provided strong leadership. These results represent the collective effort of an entire district working together.

While assessments provide valuable information about student learning, they represent only one part of the broader story of school success.
Later this fall, the New Mexico Vistas School Report Cards will be released, giving families and community members a more complete picture of how schools are performing. The NM Vistas reports will include not only test proficiency results but also information on academic growth, attendance, graduation rates, college and career readiness, and other measures that reflect the full range of what our students accomplish each day.

Deming Public Schools will continue to use this information to guide instruction, support teachers, and provide high-quality learning experiences for every student. I am deeply proud of the progress our district has made and grateful for the continued partnership of our parents, families, and community members.

Sincerely,
Nicholas Wohlgemuth – Superintendent
