Deming Public Schools Welcomes Eugene Lewis as Assistant Special Education Director

Deming Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Eugene Lewis as the district's new Assistant Special Education Director.
Mr. Lewis brings more than a decade of experience serving Deming Public Schools, with extensive expertise in special education instruction, case management, and compliance. During the past several years, he has served as a Special Education IEP Facilitator and Teacher, supporting approximately 175 students across Deming High School, Mimbres Valley High School, and Early College High School. In this role, he has ensured compliance with state and federal special education laws while helping students with disabilities achieve meaningful educational success.
Prior to becoming an IEP facilitator, Mr. Lewis served as a special education teacher in both self-contained and inclusion classrooms, managing student caseloads and working closely with families throughout the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. In addition to his work with Deming Public Schools, he has served as an adjunct professor at Western New Mexico University, teaching Practical Applications of Special Education and preparing future educators in current special education laws and best practices.
Before beginning his career in education, Mr. Lewis dedicated 25 years to the United States Border Patrol, retiring after serving in numerous leadership positions. His extensive supervisory and management experience, combined with his educational background, provides him with a strong foundation for supporting district initiatives and leading collaborative efforts. He holds a Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education from Western New Mexico University and is licensed in New Mexico as a Level II Special Education PreK–12 teacher.

As Assistant Special Education Director, Mr. Lewis will work alongside district leadership to support students, educators, and families while ensuring high-quality special education services, regulatory compliance, and continuous program improvement throughout Deming Public Schools. “I am excited about the opportunity to support and work alongside Mr. Avalos in building a Special Education Department that will be known not only for meeting legal requirements but also for providing outstanding service, strong collaboration, and meaningful student success.
