Deming Public Schools Welcomes Samuel Avalos as New Director of Special Education

Deming Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Samuel Avalos as the district's new Director of Special Education.
Mr. Avalos brings more than 25 years of experience in education, including over a decade in district-level special education leadership. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to ensuring students with disabilities receive high-quality educational services while maintaining compliance with state and federal special education requirements. He holds a Master of Arts in Educational Management and Development from New Mexico State University and is a New Mexico Level III-B Administrative License holder and Level III-A Instructional Leader in Special Education with a TESOL endorsement.
Most recently, Mr. Avalos served as a Special Education Administrator, where he supervised district special education staff, coordinated student placements, managed IDEA-B budgets, monitored Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), oversaw state and federal reporting, and collaborated with campus leaders to improve student outcomes and compliance initiatives. His extensive background also includes experience leading professional development, facilitating IEP processes, coordinating extended school year programs, and working closely with families and community partners.
Superintendent Nicholas Wohlgemuth expressed his confidence in Mr. Avalos’s experience. “We are excited to welcome Mr. Avalos to the Deming community as our new Special Education Director. His years of experience with students and families in communities across southern New Mexico will help strengthen our services, build our supports, and grow our expertise in Deming Public Schools.”

Mr. Avalos brings extensive expertise in special education evaluation timelines and requirements, a high level of comprehensive knowledge of IEP development, implementation, and progress monitoring. His proactive and positive approach ensures concerns are addressed thoroughly and effectively. Mr. Avalos has built a reputation for collaborative leadership, strategic planning, and fostering strong partnerships with educators, parents, and community stakeholders. His experience navigating complex special education regulations, managing compliance initiatives, and implementing data-driven practices positions him to strengthen Deming Public Schools' commitment to serving every student with excellence.
