Safety Drills and Exercise Planning

Safety Drills and Exercise Planning
Posted on 08/05/2025
Deming Public Schools would like to remind the community that drills and exercises are a key component of safety preparedness, they provide schools, district, and stakeholders across the community with the opportunity to shape planning, assesses and validate capabilities, and address areas for improvement. Through improvement planning, schools take the corrective actions needed to improve plans, build, and sustain capabilities, and maintain safety readiness.

During the first four weeks of school several safety drills will occur at each school site. A minimum of 2 fire drills, 1 shelter in place, and 1 evacuation. As per Deming Public Schools District Policy the total drills conducted at each site will be a minimum of 17 of which 11 are fire, and additionally 2 shelter in place, 2 lockdown, and 2 evacuation per school year. More drills may happen at a school site if administration feels that more safety practice is needed.

In an event of a safety drill first responders and local law enforcement may be involved for planning and assessing purposes.  When drills occur, all stakeholders will act as if it is not a drill. This assists all stakeholders in maintaining safety readiness.

Parents and guardians will only be informed of a shelter in place, lockdown, and/or evacuation if there is a threat to the school population.  Parents and guardians will be informed through our student information system Infinite Campus through either an email, text, and/or phone call.  As a courtesy the district will inform local media and post this information on our website and social media pages for the community and any parent/guardian who has not set up their Infinite Campus parent portal.  The district strongly encourages parents and guardians to check that your information is correct in Infinite Campus and that you have not blocked emails from the district and/or the district phone number.

If you have any questions about the district’s safety procedures, please contact your school site or the district at (575) 546-8841.
