Due to federal budget cuts, low school enrollment numbers, low meal participation, and USDA regulations for summer lunch programs the Nutrition Department has decided to focus on providing lunch for Deming Public Schools students and summer programs. Unfortunately, with the federal budget cuts the districts’ operations budget cannot sustain the summer lunch program as it was in the past. USDA regulations have made it impossible under our current nutrition staff numbers and budget to run the program. USDA regulations state that:
•
Every meal will need to be received and eaten on site
•
Separate breakfast and lunch times (can’t provide both meals at once)
•
Choose two out of three (Breakfast, Lunch, Snack)
•
High School Meal pattern (cover all ages)
•
Ages 1-18 can receive meal regardless of the child’s school
•
Using a park make sure tables, seats and water are available
•
No grab and go
•
No 2-3 days’ worth of meals
•
Child must be present to receive meal
•
No vehicle deliveries from bus or nutrition vehicle
•
Provide meals at approved sites when facility is open for the day
Current summer programs receiving lunch include Deming High School and Early College High School Summer School, Migrant Programs at Ruben S. Torres and Columbus Elementary, Summer Recreation Program, Charter School Summer Program, and Mariachi Camp. Deming High School is considered an open site and the public can go there to receive a free meal. The public will have to sign in at the front office and follow the above regulations. Free breakfast, lunch, and supper will be provided during the 2025/2026 school year. The summer meal program is an elected program for districts and not a mandated program.
