Wind Day and Weather-Related Safety Procedures

Wind Day and Weather-Related Safety Procedures
Posted on 02/17/2026

The safety of our students and staff is always our highest priority. Due to regional weather conditions common to our area, Deming Public Schools may need to adjust school operations during periods of high winds, blowing dust, or other hazardous weather. This memo outlines how weather-related decisions are made and what families can expect.

Decision Factors
- Blowing dust and air quality
-Estimated time of day for peak wind and wind gusts
- Visibility conditions
- The ability to safely transport students and staff
- High temperatures and low humidity levels

These factors are evaluated collectively with student health, campus safety, and transportation conditions as top priorities.

Possible District Actions:

Cancel the Entire School Day
If weather conditions are determined to be unsafe, the District may cancel school for the day. Whenever possible, this decision will be made and communicated the night before to support family planning.

Operate with an Early Dismissal
In some situations, schools may operate with a planned early dismissal, preferably a half day. Families will be notified as early as possible to allow time for transportation and childcare arrangements.

Shelter in Place During the School Day
If school is already in session and conditions worsen unexpectedly, and early dismissal is not safe, students and staff will shelter in place on campus until conditions improve and it is safe to dismiss students.

Communication
Families will be notified of weather-related decisions through official District communication channels, including text messages, email, and the District website and social media platforms.

We appreciate your understanding and continued partnership as we work to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.
