As we continuously strive to refine our 2024-2025 school calendar to best meet the needs of our students, staff, and community, we have made some adjustments based on recent NM-PED rules, budgets, and your feedback. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding for professional development, we have removed some of these days from the revised calendars. We are exploring alternatives to ensure planning time for teachers to create high quality learning experiences.

Deming High School National Honor Society (NHS) Chapter is proud to announce its initiative to collect prom dress donations for students in need. Beginning April 5th through April 11th, gently used and new dresses are welcomed from generous donors within the community. Prom is a significant event for high school students, but the expenses associated with it can be prohibitive for some families. Recognizing this, the NHS Deming Chapter is looking to ensure that every student has the opportunity to attend prom feeling confident and beautiful, regardless of their financial circumstances. Students from Deming High School, Mimbres Valley High School, and Early College High School who are in need of a prom dress are invited to stop by Mrs. Odell's room between April 8th and April 12th. This will provide them with the opportunity to peruse a selection of dresses and choose the one that resonates with them, free of charge.

As a part of our ongoing commitment to providing your child with the best educational opportunities possible, Deming High School and Mimbres Valley High School want to notify parents and guardians of the upcoming testing and remote learning days. On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, only 11th graders and selected 12th graders will attend school in-person to take the NM-ASR science exam. Students in grades 9th, 10th, and non-selected 12th graders will participate in a remote learning day. Additionally, on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, only 9th and 11th graders (a few selected 12th graders) will attend school in-person to take the PSAT 9 and SAT. Students in 10th grade and non-selected 12th graders will participate in a remote learning day.

Due to a lack of substitute teachers, Columbus Elementary will participate in remote learning this Friday, March 8, 2024. Learning Packets will be sent home with students on Thursday. Deming Public Schools wants to inform the public about a threat that was made against Deming High School on Snapchat last night. Once notified, High School Administration immediately contacted law enforcement who made contact with the suspect. The threat is being investigated and mitigated following all safety protocols. There will be additional presence of law enforcement at the high school and on our campuses. We take all threats seriously and DPS is very grateful to everyone who reported this incident to us. The National Weather Center is expecting extremely high winds across NM tomorrow, Tuesday, February 27, 2024. Deming Public Schools is working with our local representatives from The National Weather Center to monitor the situation so that we can ensure everyone’s safety. At this time, we plan to hold school as normal HOWEVER, based on today’s information, there is a possibility students will be released early tomorrow due to extreme winds and blowing dust. We remain hopeful that the current predictions change, and school will not be disrupted tomorrow, but we wanted to inform that releasing early tomorrow might be a possibility. Lady Wildcats Win District!! Undefeated in District, your District Champion Lady Wildcats will host the District Basketball Tournament Championship on Friday, March 1, 2024. Game will be against the winner of Game 2 on Wednesday night. Start time for the game will be 6pm and doors will open at 4:45pm. All tickets must be purchased through GoFan.co and will be $5.00 for all ages. No season passes will be accepted for this game. Come out and support Lady Wildcat Basketball.

Deming High School Boys Basketball will travel to Chaparral High School on Monday, February 26, 2024 for the first round of the 3-4A District Tournament. Game will start at 6pm. Wildcat Basketball must win to advance. Come out to support your Wildcat Basketball!

The National Honor Society (NHS) announced that Yazmin Garcia, a high school senior at Deming High School and member of NHS, has been selected as an NHS Scholarship semifinalist. Since 1946, more than $25 million in scholarships have been awarded to outstanding NHS senior members to support college access and student success. The scholarship program is supported by the parent organization of NHS, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Attention all BALLERS!! Youth Basketball is back for grades 1st through 6th. Open to girls and boys in 1st through 6th grade. Learn basic basketball skills and team sports concepts. Registration Fee is $50 for 1 player and $25 additional per sibling. Fee includes uniform and trophy. Parents interested in coaching please ask during registration.

Early College High School will be accepting 60 ninth-grade students for the 2024-2025 school year. The Early College High School was created by Deming Public Schools to provide a challenging academic program in a smaller setting. Students complete their core high school required credits during the first two years and then take college classes for the remaining two years. The goal is to graduate with a head start on college and an Associate degree

Attention DHS Parents and Students

Dear Parents of School Bus Riders, Valentine’s Day is fast approaching! The Deming Public Schools Transportation Department would like to remind parents in order to keep your child safe on the bus, please do not send your student’s balloons and/or any other large valentine’s arrangements that may cause a safety concern on the bus. Balloons are prohibited to be sent on the bus due to causing no visibility for the driver to see throughout the cabin and large stuffed animals and characters may not block the aisle or take up room on a seat. Please make sure that any stuffed animals and snacks are able to be stored safely in the student’s backpack. Also, please keep in mind food and drinks are prohibited on the bus due to choking hazards. “Roses are red, violets are blue, keep bus safety in mind...please and thank you!”

Deming Public Schools responded Wednesday, January 31, 2024, to a possible threat on a school bus. Law enforcement was dispatched and responded quickly. After investigation an air soft gun was discovered on a student. Deming Public Schools takes this matter very seriously and district officials are collaborating with law enforcement to address the incident. The district would like to thank law enforcement for their quick and immediate support during the coordinated response effort.

Deming Public Schools has scheduled school bus rear door evacuations for Monday, January 29, 2024. Buses will load their students, engage the bus into gear, pull forward a minimum 10 feet, apply the parking brake, gear into neutral, the driver will give the student instructions on what to do and then unload. Students shall depart the bus walking briefly a minimum of 75 feet to the front of the bus assuming the issue is towards the front of the bus. • Once all students have unloaded, the driver will then call all students to load where they were seated. No students are to get off the bus with their backpacks. • Please note, buses will be running 10-15 minutes behind schedule on this day. • Some bus evacuations will be in the morning, but most will be in the afternoon. New Mexico Public Education Department is proposing a NEW rule to require a minimum of 180 school days for students. This is an increase to most districts and charter schools calendars and bypasses local decision making authority. This meeting is to share more information on the proposed rule change, allow for community feedback, and inform the public on how to provide feedback on the rule to the New Mexico Public Education Department. Parents, guardians, and family members are invited to eat lunch with their children. Advanced tickets, for $6.00, MUST be purchased, and will be on sale ONLY until 3:00 p.m. on November 01, 2023. There will be no tickets sold on the day of the event. If you do not have a ticket, you will not be admitted to the event. Tickets are non-refundable. Lunch is free for enrolled DPS students. In observance of National School Bus Safety Week, Deming Public Schools would like to thank our dedicated bus drivers, assistants, and substitutes for going the extra mile to ensure that all students make it to and from school safely. National School Bus Safety Week is celebrated during the third full week of October every year. This week is dedicated to promoting school bus safety and educating students, parents, and drivers about the importance of being safe around school buses.

On Wednesday, October 18, Early College High School will have an adjusted schedule for each grade due to PSAT-NMSQT testing. Below are details about testing day: • 10th & 11th Grade students will be testing and need to be at ECHS in person. • 9th & 12th Grade students will be doing virtual learning and should stay home.

On the upcoming PSAT Testing day, Wednesday, October 18, students who are not taking tests will not be required to attend school in person, they will attend school virtually.. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to: 1. Review their current grades. 2. Complete any makeup assignments. 3. Email teachers with questions about grades or coursework. We strongly encourage students to use this day productively to improve their academic standing.

New Procedure on Grading for Edgenuity Courses In accordance with the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) guidelines, all courses—online or traditional—must receive grades each grading period, and these will be reflected on a student's transcript. To foster accountability in student progress, we've updated our documentation procedures for Edgenuity courses.

During Fall Break on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, law enforcement will undergo a series of sensitive training sessions on and within the premises of Memorial Elementary. Trainings will consist of strictly movement skills and will assist police personnel in becoming familiar with the layout of the buildings. Deming Public Schools will be asking for the renewal of the Public School Capital Improvement Act Two Mill Levy during the upcoming election on November 7, 2023. Please go out and vote. The funds from the two mill levy are imperative to maintain all of our schools.

Deming Public Schools wants to inform the public that today, September 22, 2023, Ruben S. Torres Elementary administration was alerted to a potential weapon on campus. In partnership with local law enforcement the school site went into lockdown. An individual, not associated with the schools, was arrested outside of the school building, and never gained entry or access to any of the facility. All students and staff were safe and secure in the building.

Deming Public Schools wants to inform the public that on Thursday, September 21, 2023, Bus # 43 stopped to attend to student related medical emergencies. Out of an abundance of caution, EMS transported several students for additional evaluation. All other students were transported to their regular bus stops. Parents of students on Bus # 43 were notified of the situation.

The Deming High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Students would like to invite the entire community to our See You at the Pole event, on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at 7:00am around the flagpole at DHS Memorial Stadium. See You at the Pole is a Global Day of Student prayer, which began in 1990 as a grass roots movement with ten students praying at their school. Twenty-Two years later, millions pray on their campuses on the fourth Wednesday in September not just around the country, but around the World. See You at the Pole is simply a prayer rally where students meet at the school flagpole before school to lift up their friends, families, teachers, school, and nation to God. See You at the Pole is a student-initiated, student-organized, and student-led event.

Local law enforcement, Deming Public Schools staff, and EMS arrived quickly on the scene and assessed the situation. No injuries were reported, and all students are safe. Parents who were unable to be contacted to pick up their student, were transported home by bus.

Staff were moved out of the building to other school sites and meals were modified at My Little School, Bell Elementary, Chaparral Elementary, and Memorial Elementary. Communication was sent to parents at those four schools along with being posted on our social media sites, website, and released to our media partners. Under emergency procurement, a licensed external plumber was hired to replace all the gas lines in the central cafeteria building. As of September 5, the work has been completed and the inspection was passed. Hot meals resumed at all effected school sites on August 28 utilizing other kitchens across the district. We take all concerns seriously, investigate them thoroughly, and work with appropriate agencies to ensure our facilities are safe. We want to inform you of a new Immunization requirement that will be in effect for students enrolling in Fall 2023 semester in New Mexico. • All students entering 11th grade who are 16 years and older, will be required to get a second dose of a vaccine called Meningococcal ACWY or MenACWY. • If your teen is not yet 16, but is entering 11th grade, wait until your teen turns 16 to get the booster and please let the school nurse know. Boosters given before age 16 don’t count and would have to be repeated.

Attention Parents and Students

Deming Public Schools will resume hot meals for the students at My Little School, Bell Elementary, Chaparral Elementary, and Memorial Elementary on Monday, August 28, 2023. While central cafeteria is under repair the district has reorganized meal preparation and distribution from other school sites to resume hot meal service to students. Update on COVID-19 Guidance

To update student information and collect necessary yearly information, Deming Public Schools utilizes its online registration system to update contact information for students, parents, and emergency contacts. This will also give parents the opportunity to sign FERPA forms, media release information and digital device information for each student in the household.

Deming Future Farmers of America (FFA) students attended the New Mexico State FFA Convention in Las Cruces in June where members, advisors, parents, and supporters from across the state come together to compete and celebrate the achievements of the last year.

Deming Public Schools central cafeteria is undergoing repairs for gas lines. Out of an abundance of caution to address the issue completely and thoroughly, the district is completely replacing gas lines in order to restore gas service. Central cafeteria provides meals for My Little School, Bell Elementary, Chaparral Elementary, and Memorial Elementary. We anticipate the repairs to be completed by Wednesday, August 23, 2023, and hope to be approved by inspection before the end of the week.

The Deming chapter of the National Honor Society proudly announces the election of its new slate of officers for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. The National Honor Society recognizes and celebrates exceptional high school students who have demonstrated exemplary scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Deming Public Schools would like to remind the community that safety drills are a key component of keeping our students and staff safe. Safety drills provide schools, district, and stakeholders across the community with the opportunity to assess and validate capabilities, shape planning, and address areas for improvement. Through the practice of drills, schools take corrective actions needed to maintain safety readiness.

Deming Public Schools Transportation Department would like to inform parents and students who ride the bus of the following: • Due to high temperatures, bus riders have been permitted to take water bottles on the bus until Friday, September 15, 2023. • Only water is allowed on the bus. • Bus drivers will have windows down to help air circulate and keep temperatures in the bus as low as possible. New Mexico School Sales Tax Holiday begins August 4th through August 6th at midnight.

Below are some reminders from the Transportation Team for the new school year. Student Eligibility • New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) transportation state statue provides that students are eligible for transportation services if school bus routes are: • One mile one way for students in grades kindergarten through 6 • One and one-half miles one way for students in grades 7-9 • Two miles one way for students in grades 10-12 • Students will not be required to walk a greater distance to the bus stop than the required walking distance for each grade level. • All NM Pre-K students are ineligible for transportation except those with an IEP that require special needs busing.

August Addition: Attention DHS Parents and Students

Student bussing information will be available a week before the 1st day of school in the Campus Parent & Student Portal! All Parents (PK-12) and students (grades 6-12) have access to view bussing information in their portal.

Deming Public Schools will be offering a free summer camp the week of July 17-21. The summer camp is open to K-12 students and will be offered at two locations Deming High School(K-12) and Columbus Elementary(K-5).

Bataan Elementary School hosted veterans, first responders, and family members during their annual Veterans Day Program on Friday, November 11, 2022. The 5th grade team organized the program, and the 5th grade students led the entire program including the welcome, introductions, and closing.
