Deming Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Eugene Lewis as the district's new Assistant Special Education Director. Mr. Lewis brings more than a decade of experience serving Deming Public Schools, with extensive expertise in special education instruction, case management, and compliance. During the past several years, he has served as a Special Education IEP Facilitator and Teacher, supporting approximately 175 students across Deming High School, Mimbres Valley High School, and Early College High School. In this role, he has ensured compliance with state and federal special education laws while helping students with disabilities achieve meaningful educational success.

Mr. Avalos brings more than 25 years of experience in education, including over a decade in district-level special education leadership. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to ensuring students with disabilities receive high-quality educational services while maintaining compliance with state and federal special education requirements. He holds a Master of Arts in Educational Management and Development from New Mexico State University and is a New Mexico Level III-B Administrative License holder and Level III-A Instructional Leader in Special Education with a TESOL endorsement.

Magali Turner Named 2026 National Lowell Milken Center Fellow

The Lowell Milken Center (LMC) for Unsung Heroes in Fort Scott, Kansas, an international educational non-profit, has awarded its prestigious Fellowship to Magali Turner, a 2023 New Mexico Milken Educator and fifth-grade teacher at Ruben S. Torres Elementary School in Deming, New Mexico. Magali will arrive in Fort Scott on June 21st for a week of collaboration with LMC staff and the other members of the Fellowship.

26-27 New Student Registration Opens May 1, 2026

New student online registration (OLR) opens Friday, May 1, 2026, for PreK, Kindergarten, and all students new to the district. The registration link is available on the Deming Public Schools website under “Registration”. Families are encouraged to review the website in advance to become familiar with the required information and documents needed to successfully complete registration. All new elementary students must register at their boundary school based on their current physical address, as indicated in the Online Registration (OLR) application. As you begin the OLR application, be sure to select the 2026–2027 school year.

Deming Public Schools Celebrates Historic Graduation Rate Gains; Deming High School Ranked 4th in Statewide Growth

Deming Public Schools (DPS) is proud to announce a significant milestone in student achievement, as newly released data from the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) shows the district’s four-year graduation rate has surged to 82.5% for the Class of 2025. This achievement marks a substantial 5.9 percentage-point increase from the previous year, far outpacing the statewide growth average. Leading this district-wide success is Deming High School, which has been recognized by the NMPED for achieving the 4th highest growth in graduation rates statewide among traditional high schools. Deming High School’s rate rose to 85.3%, a testament to the dedicated efforts of educators, students, and families to prioritize academic persistence. "These numbers represent more than just statistics; they represent lives changed and futures secured," said Nicholas Wohlgemuth, Superintendent of Deming Public Schools. "Seeing such a significant jump across our district, particularly the historic growth at Deming High School, validates the strategic interventions and support systems we have implemented to ensure every student reaches the finish line."

Due to regional weather conditions common to our area, Deming Public Schools may need to adjust school operations during periods of high winds, blowing dust, or other hazardous weather. This memo outlines how weather-related decisions are made and what families can expect. Decision Factors - Blowing dust and air quality -Estimated time of day for peak wind and wind gusts - Visibility conditions - The ability to safely transport students and staff - High temperatures and low humidity levels These factors are evaluated collectively with student health, campus safety, and transportation conditions as top priorities.

The Portal works as a neutral bridge that supports communication between districts, schools, students, and their families. While New Mexico as a whole made significant strides in literacy and stabilized science performance, some Deming schools were among those that had the largest gains in the state.
