National School Bus Safety Week

National School Bus Safety Week
Posted on 10/18/2023

In observance of National School Bus Safety Week, Deming Public Schools would like to thank our dedicated bus drivers, assistants, and substitutes for going the extra mile to ensure that all students make it to and from school safely. National School Bus Safety Week is celebrated during the third full week of October every year. This week is dedicated to promoting school bus safety and educating students, parents, and drivers about the importance of being safe around school buses.

Safety starts at the bus stop. Did you know a student’s greatest risk is not riding a school bus but approaching or leaving a school bus? 90% of all school bus related fatalities occur while loading or unloading the school bus.

Before heading out the door go over a few safety tips with your children:
• Arrive early
• Stand at least five giant steps from the curb
• Look both ways before crossing the street
• Don’t play near the street

As our students head to and from school every day, drivers remember these important safety tips:
• Recognize school zones
• Reduce your speed when traveling through school zones and watch for children
• Expect increased traffic in and around school zones
• Be aware of and cautious of pedestrian crosswalks in school zones
• Obey crossing guards, traffic officers, and policeman
• Be on the lookout for school buses
• Prepare to stop when a slowing school bus flashes its overhead yellow lights
• It’s the law to STOP at least 20 feet away from school buses when red lights are flashing
• Never pass a stopped school bus

With your help, we can keep our children safe. If you have any questions, please contact the Transportation Department at (575) 543-1009 or [email protected].
